Making Music Herstory: Artist Profile, Jennah Bell

Los Angeles CA, USA, July 22, 2009 -

Making Music Herstory centers around the art of the sing-songwriters. They create original music to record with other female musicians, engineers, and producers. The Indie artists involved with the project are unique with clear artistry, great lyricists, strong vocalists, and are steering their careers with pure business savvy. One of the artists that encapsulates all of those things is Jennah Bell.

“Jennah was introduced to me by Paris Strother. I heard her voice, her lyrics, her music and I almost stopped breathing! exclaims Executive Producer Lisa Chamblee-Hampton. She paints these pictures in your mind through your ears and you are transported to a magical place. It sounds corny, but it’s true. Being pleased that she is involved is an understatement.”

Hailing from Sunny-season less Northern California, Jennah Bell’s style incorporates her Liberal/Bohemian upbringing. At a young age everyone could tell she would be an artist, of what kind? No one knew. She dabbles in the culinary arts, painting & amp, photography, dancing, and last but not least, music.

She began learning to play the piano, followed by the flute, had a brief stint with the drums, and finally found her muse in the guitar. Music was never a serious career choice until she was blessed with the opportunity to attend a wonderful summer program affiliated with the Grammy Foundation. A competitive audition process placed her as one of 11 singer/songwriters from around the U.S. Her peers, elders, and music business professionals (Paul Williams, Jimmy Jam, INXS) embraced her unorthodox writing style (writing songs about fish, and the Wizard of Oz), alternative/folk/soul song melodies, and endearing honest vocals.

This gave her the courage and motivation she needed to apply to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. Now at 19 in her 4th semester at Berklee, Jennah is ready to spread sunshine, the fresh smell of laundry, and daisies to the rest of the world.

Making Music Herstory: Musician Profile, Sheila E

Los Angeles CA, USA, July 22, 2009 -

The music of Making Music Herstory is that much better because of the level of musicianship involved. “We strive to hold on to many of the traditional production techniques, and that includes having musicians play live for tracking, says Executive Producer, Lisa Chamblee-Hampton. When I asked myself, who will be able to hold down the rhythm section for any type of music we throw at her? Immediately there was only one answer: Sheila E!” The answer was clear because Sheila is completely multi-faceted and so deeply integrated into all aspects of the entertainment industry that her involvement is highly welcomed.

From age 17, Sheila has recorded and toured extensively with renowned artists such as Babyface, Billy Cobham, Natalie Cole, George Duke, Pete Escovedo, Gloria Estefan, Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Nicks, Patti LaBelle, Cyndi Lauper, Prince, Lionel Richie, Diana Ross, Ringo Starr, Tito Puente, Don Was, Stevie Wonder and countless others, but to name a few.

In 1983, Sheila caught the attention of Prince and changed her name to "Sheila E.," and Prince helped her record her first solo album, "The Glamorous Life." The first single from the album, "The Glamorous Life," written, performed, and directed by Sheila E., was released in the spring of 1984 and earned popular and critical acclaim. This single went on to receive multiple Grammy and American Music Award nominations, and won MTV's Best Video Award. "The Glamorous Life" yielded a hit single in the title track, and another hit for its follow-up single, "The Belle of St. Mark."

In 2004 Sheila joined Prince on the "Musicology" tour, which was seen by 1.5 million people. She also performed "The Glamorous Life" at the 7th Annual VH1 Divas, a benefit concert for the VH1 Save the Music Foundation that was televised worldwide, and appeared on the TBN network show "Praise The Lord" that received the highest ratings of the season. In 2005 Sheila was a Featured Artist and Musical Director for her first gospel tour "Sisters In The Spirit" featuring Yolanda Adams, Martha Munizzi, Kelly Price, Juanita Bynum and RiZen. In the summer of 2006 Sheila returned for the third time and toured in concert with the legendary Ringo Starr. In 2006 Sheila founded her all girl group C.O.E.D. (Chronicles Of Every Diva) featuring Sheila E., Rhonda Smith, Kat Dyson, and Cassandra O'Neal, who went on their highly acclaimed first European tour in March 2007 with special guest Dutch sax player Candy Dulfer. In 2007, Sheila was chosen as one of the celebrity judges for American Idol Spin-Off "The Next Great American Band."

Founder and president of HEAVEN PRODUCTIONS MUSIC, a music production company, Sheila and company has been hired to direct and arrange music for the ALMA Awards (1998 & 1999), The 1998 WoW Awards, 1998 Gospel Music Association's annual event, and the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards. She co-hosted ABC's Countdown To the American Music Awards with Wayne Brady, hosted 10 episodes of VH1's Arsenio Jams, and appeared as a celebrity judge for NBCs Americas Most Talented Kids Finals. In 2003 she wrote, recorded and taped a montage for the World Series in Baseball.

Currently, Sheila, a philanthropist, continues to devote her talents and time to the Elevate Hope Foundation (EHF), a charitable organization (which she is co-founder and co-chair) that assists the needs of abused and abandoned children through music therapy. Despite the demands of her commitment to making music, she maintains a heavy involvement in the organization. "There are so many kids who need our help," she says, "And we're trying to help them get their lives together by building their confidence through music and the arts. It's just another way for me to do God's will, another reason for living. I believe we are here to help people in this lifetime. We must give something of ourselves to truly live." Sheila E. and EHF have presented countless events to raise money for the foundation.

Most recently, Sheila E. participated in the third season of CMT's hit show, "Gone Country." She was the Grand Prize Winner and has gone on to release her first country single & video for her song, "Glorious Train."

Sheila E. is indeed a multi-faceted drummer, percussionist, vocalist, songwriter, performer, arranger, producer, composer, instrumentalist and humanitarian. Her gifts have brought joy on the world and have made her one of today's brightest talents, and she continues to be one of our most treasured stars.

Making Music Herstory: Engineer Profile, Lenise Bent

Los Angeles CA, USA, June 16, 2009 -

Making Music Herstory is very proud of the relationships it’s been forming with some the most talented women in music. This week’s profile is on engineer, producer, post audio mixer/editor, foreign dubbing advisor and archivist Lenise Bent. She has a very diverse and full career that has attracted her skills to MMH. “We met over the phone and immediately we had a great rapport. Then we ran into each other at a Grammy event and her personality shined right through,” says Executive Producer Lisa Chamblee-Hampton. “I can tell that she makes artists feel at ease and that releases creativity. Hearing her work and knowing her gives me complete confidence in her producing and engineering songs for the album. We are fortunate to have her on the project!”

Lenise studied film & TV production at USC & Cal State Long Beach, then engineering at SoundMasters Recording School. She started as an assistant engineer at The Village Recorders in Los Angeles working on several albums including “Aja” by Steely Dan, “Breakfast in America” by Supertramp and “Tusk” by Fleetwood Mac. Later she became chief engineer for producer Mike Chapman recording the platinum selling record “AutoAmerican” for Blondie plus several of Chapman’s other artists such as The Knack and Suzi Quatro, recording at a variety of studios which include The Record Plant, Air London and United Western, which later became Ocean Way, then Cello.

Lenise moved into post-production mixing, editing and supervising where she works with all types of audio, from music to voice-over, ADR and foley. She has traveled all over the world for Dreamworks, supervising & producing vocals and dialogue for their foreign language versions of films including SHREK, SPIRIT & SHREK 2.

Lenise is a long-standing member of NARAS as well as the Producers and Engineers Wing of the Recording Academy and has recently been elected to the board of directors of the Los Angeles chapter of Women in Music. She is also involved with Active Music, a non-profit organization that raises awareness and money for other non-profits through the music community. She periodically teaches classes at SAE Institute on “Studio Budgets, Protocols and Etiquette” and “Location Sound, Foley and Hard Effects”.

Five years ago Lenise returned to her true love, music, and is recording and producing up-and-coming independent artists as well as seasoned professionals. She believes, “There are only two kinds of music…good and bad. I love working on all styles of music as long as it’s in the first group.”

Making Music Herstory: Musician Profile, Paris Strother

Los Angeles CA, USA, May 11, 2009 -

Making Music Herstory has some very talented musicians and songwriters collaborating on this project. This week’s profile is on an incredible musician and songwriter, Paris Strother. She is an extremely talented pianist, songwriter, arranger, and composer that we are proud to have on the project and are excited to be working with. “Paris always brings me back to the music. It is such a thrill to hear her play, to hear her songs. The music is what this whole project is about so I’m so happy to have so many talented women in music,” comments Executive Producer Lisa Chamblee-Hampton.

By the age of 13, Paris began to play professionally around Minneapolis for such events as mayoral inaugurations and fundraisers, and soon graduated to playing the most renowned jazz clubs in the Twin Cities by age 15. By the time she finished high school, Paris had already performed with some of the Twin Cities’ best performers and musicians. She then took the most practical step towards turning her passion into a career; she decided to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music.

Berklee proved to be a challenge for Paris, but a challenge she welcomed. The encouraging yet intimidating climate pushed her to better her craft, and by the end of her second year had graced every stage, big and small, at Berklee. She easily adapted to the different styles that all of these opportunities called for, ultimately transforming her into a talented artist in many different genres.

In May of 2008 Paris graduated with Bachelor's degree in Contemporary Writing and Production, and continued her education by working in production and development for the historic Monterey Jazz Festival, and as the Special Programs Coordinator for the Thelonious Monk Institute. She now lives in Los Angeles, California, and is working as a performing artist, songwriter, and teacher. Paris has developed into a “noteworthy talent”, Keep an eye on her! www.parisstrother.com

After putting out an open call for female singers, songwriters, producers, engineers, and musicians, the response for the Making Music Herstory project has been empowering! The invitation, which was extended in March 2009 (coinciding with National Women’s History Month) netted hundreds of responses inclusive of independent and major label artists.
